One of Nation’s Most Eco-friendly Races thanks to AVANGRID Green Initiative

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Faxon Law New Haven Road Race has turned virtual. The 2020 event, although virtual, is still focused on reducing its carbon footprint and hosting an environmentally friendly event. Last year, the 2019 races took on the challenge of going green and will continue that into this year’s virtual race.

The Green Initiative, sponsored by AVANGRID, will bring a number of changes including  less waste due to the virtual nature of the event, sustainable t-shirts, paper mailer bags, a smaller carbon footprint due to no participants, spectators, volunteers, or sponsors using gas to drive to the race, fewer paper products wasted with the elimination of sending out paper applications throughout the City, and the use of recyclable race bibs. This year’s race t-shirts are made with sustainable materials. Each shirt is made with at least 6 recycled water bottles and all yard is spun, knit, dyed, and finished in the USA.

The virtual event will reduce the amount of race-day waste immensely. Over 70,000 disposable water and beer cups will not be wasted, nearly 750 gallons of water will be saved, 1,000 disposable energy gel packages will stay out of the landfill and virtually all race day trash will be eliminated. “As much as we would like to be running a live event this year, hosting the virtual 2020 Faxon Law New Haven Road Race puts the amount race-day waste into perspective. Seeing these numbers shows us that we have room for improvement and tells us exactly where these improvements can be made.  We are always looking for ways to be better the event and reducing the race’s carbon footprint is a great place to start,” says race president Michael Dolan.

“We are looking forward to supporting the Faxon Law New Haven Road Race again this year as they look to continue to reduce their carbon footprint. Last year’s green initiative was a great success and we are proud to be partnering with the race again as they continue to better their event environmentally, even as it turns virtual.” Said Al Carbone, Manager of Government and Community Relations at AVANGRID the title sponsor of the Green Initiative.
