RUNNERS' SAFETY

The New Haven Road Race committee takes every precaution to make our race one of the country's safest road races. The entire course is closed to vehicular traffic. All intersections are secured by a member of the New Haven Police Department or Traffic and Parking Department.

Medical spotters are located every mile throughout the course and have radio contact with the New Haven Fire Department. Peter Jokl M.D., an orthopedic surgeon on the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine is the race's medical director, and is nationally known in the sports medicine field. On race day, he directs a team of five doctors and 10 support personnel at the finish area. Using guidelines formulated by USATF, Dr. Jokl has the authority to cancel our event in the case of extreme heat and humidity. Ambulances are stationed in the finish area, and athletes are never more than ten minutes from a hospital on the course. A bus follows the last runner and picks up any runners who drop out. Spotters are stationed at one mile intervals along the course and can get an ambulance directed to any spot along the race course within minutes.

WATER STATIONS

Aid stations providing water and medical support are located at every mile along the 20K race course. Over 300 volunteers provide runners with 30,000 cups of water and 12,500 cups of fluid replacement drink.  In 2008, GU20 will be served at selected aid stations.

Each water station has a team captain and up to 40 volunteers. Groups that man the water stations vary from youth groups and boy scout troops to local businesses and friends who have volunteered for many years.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Starting on the picturesque New Haven Green, all three courses are flat and fast. The 20 kilometer course winds its way past Yale University, residential neighborhoods, scenic waterfront areas and large city parks. The 20K course has 2 hills and the rest of the course is flat with few turns. The 5K and 1/2 mile races have no hills. Khalid Khannouchi's and Collen De Reuck's World Records set in 1998 race attest to the ease of the course.  Carol McLatchie and Paul Pilkington set American 20K Masters Records in New Haven. Trina Painter set an American record winning the 1995 race. In 1997, Keith Andersen ran the fastest 20K ever by a man in the Master's division.

COURSE EXCITEMENT

In 2007, fourteen bands will play on the 20K race course.  5K runners will enjoy the music of four bands.  Runners, in the past, have enjoyed the bands and more bands are planned in the future.  A "spirit" contest encourages the runners' enjoyment of the race. The large crowds, posters and music generated by the contest are greatly appreciated.

TIMING AND RESULTS

Each year, one of the country's best known timing services provides computerized timing of our race. Results are posted shortly after each runner's finish. Complete race results are posted in the New Haven Register on the day after the race.  Race Results will be available on this web site following the event.
